The KG names, explained

Junior KG, Senior KG, LKG, UKG: what the names mean, and the order.

Different cities and boards use different names for the same two kindergarten years. In Mumbai, Junior KG is the year many schools call LKG (Lower Kindergarten) and Senior KG is UKG (Upper Kindergarten). Here is the sequence, the usual ages, and what each year is for.

The sequence

Four years, in order, with the usual ages.

The two kindergarten years are the same everywhere; only the names change. This is how NAS runs them.

The names

LKG, UKG, Junior, Senior: one map.

Forms, directories and other cities use different words for the same years. Read the age band, not the label.

LKG · Lower Kindergarten

The first kindergarten year. Called Junior KG in Mumbai, Jr. KG on many forms, and KG-1 in some schools.

UKG · Upper Kindergarten

The second kindergarten year, the one before Class 1. Called Senior KG in Mumbai, Sr. KG on forms, and KG-2 in some schools.

Nursery and Playgroup come first

Playgroup (Mother-Toddler) is the first school experience, held gently with a familiar adult nearby. Nursery is the first full preschool year.

Ages are bands, not rules

Schools set their own cut-offs. At NAS: Playgroup 1.5–2.5, Nursery 2.5–3.5, Junior KG 3.5–4.5, Senior KG 4.5–5.5. The office confirms fit for a date of birth.
